What is a “University Professor”? The University of Toronto recognizes unusual scholarly achievement and pre-eminence in a particular field of knowledge through the designation of , which represents the university’s highest and most distinguished academic rank. In fact, this exclusive appointment is generally reserved for no more than 2% of the university’s tenured faculty.
Since taking the helm as the College’s 16th Provost & Vice-Chancellor in July 2024, Provost Terpstra’s steadfast commitment to the student experience and the success of the College are evident in everything he does. He is a generous leader, valued mentor and teacher, and kind colleague and friend to so many of us.
As a respected international scholar of the Renaissance period, he has inspired generations of students and emerging academics, and earned the admiration and respect of peers around the world. While juggling the demands of being Provost of Trinity, he continues his scholarly work; and from time to time is called upon to provide expert media commentary under the modern lens. For instance, last year, he met Justin Theroux and Queer Eye’s Antoni Porowski to trace Theroux’s family heritage for an episode of !

Nicholas Terpstra of the department of history in the Faculty of Arts & Science: A leading historian of the Italian Renaissance, Terpstra’s scholarship has explored topics at the intersections of politics, religion and gender. Through his influential work on civil society, religious refugees and digital humanities – including the groundbreaking DECIMA mapping project – he has transformed understanding of early modern societies while pioneering innovative spatial, sensory and digital research methods.
